Wink Murder

One secret murderer kills people by winking at them. The victims die, dramatically, and everyone tries to catch the killer before the room is empty.

Games with a link have a full rules page. The rest are explained in one line, which is all most of them need.

Draw a card and the deck picks a game for you. Switch off the settings that don't fit, like outdoors on a rainy night, and every card shows the rules in one line.

40 group games for adults

Group games with no props

8
  1. Wink Murder: one secret murderer kills people by winking at them. The victims die, dramatically, and everyone tries to catch the killer before the room is empty.
  2. Mafia: a narrator secretly picks a few mafia players. Every night they remove a villager, every day the group argues and votes someone out. Best with 8 to 15.
  3. Charades: act out a film, a song or a book without a word while your team guesses against the clock.
  4. Two Truths and a Lie: say three things about yourself, one of them false. The group votes on the lie.
  5. Paranoia: whisper a question to the person next to you, they answer out loud with a name. A coin flip decides whether the room hears the question.
  6. Never Have I Ever: everyone holds up ten fingers. Say something you have never done, and everyone who has done it puts a finger down.
  7. Zip Zap Zop: stand in a circle and pass the words zip, zap, zop in that order by pointing at someone. Say the wrong word or hesitate and you are out.
  8. Ninja: start in a circle in a ninja pose. On your turn you make one quick move to hit another player's hand, and they may move only that hand to dodge. Get hit and that hand is out.

Group games on your phones

7

Modes in the Dronk app for iPhone. Pass one phone around, or let up to 16 players join with a pin code.

  1. Imposter: everyone gets the secret word except the imposter. One clue each, then vote out whoever is faking it. 3 to 20 players.
  2. The Quiz: the host shares a 4 digit pin and up to 16 players answer on their own phones. With a bigger group, play in teams.
  3. Most Likely To: read the question and everyone points at once, or vote from your own phone in LIVE mode.
  4. Would You Rather: two options, everyone picks a side, and the minority has to explain themselves.
  5. The Bomb: say an answer that fits the category and pass the phone before the hidden fuse goes off.
  6. The Spy: everyone knows the location except the spy. Ask questions, find the spy, or let the spy guess where you are.
  7. The Board: music jeopardy with real song clips. Split the group into teams and keep score.

Group games with paper and pens

7
  1. Fishbowl: everyone writes names on slips of paper. Two teams guess them in three rounds: describe the name, then one word only, then act it out. Same names every round.
  2. Telephone Pictionary: write a sentence, pass it on, the next player draws it, the next describes the drawing. Unfold at the end and read them out.
  3. Scattergories: draw a letter, fill in a list of categories with words that start with it, and score only the answers nobody else wrote.
  4. Who Am I: a famous name on a sticky note on your forehead. Ask yes or no questions until you know who you are.
  5. Dictionary: read out a rare word, everyone writes a fake definition, then the group votes on which one is real. Points for fooling people.
  6. Pictionary in teams: one player draws, the team guesses before the timer runs out. No letters, no numbers, no pointing at things in the room.
  7. Consequences: everyone writes one part of a story, folds the paper and passes it on. A man's name, a woman's name, where they met, what happened. Read the results out loud.

Outdoor group games

6
  1. Kubb: two teams throw wooden sticks to knock over the other team's blocks, then the king in the middle. Hit the king too early and you lose.
  2. Cornhole: throw beanbags at a slanted board with a hole. In the hole is 3 points, on the board is 1, and the first team to 21 wins.
  3. Photo scavenger hunt: teams get the same list of photos to take in an hour, like the whole team in a tree or a stranger's dog. Points per photo, bonus for style.
  4. Capture the Flag: two teams, two flags, two halves of a park. Steal the other flag and bring it home without being tagged.
  5. Water balloon toss: pairs throw a balloon to each other and take a step back after every catch. The last pair with a whole balloon wins.
  6. Tug of war: two teams, one rope, a line in the middle. Simple, short and somehow always the loudest five minutes of the day.

Group games for work events

6
  1. Marshmallow Challenge: teams get 20 sticks of spaghetti, about a meter of tape, about a meter of string and one marshmallow. Build the tallest tower that holds the marshmallow on top in 18 minutes.
  2. Human Bingo: everyone gets a bingo card with squares like "has lived abroad" or "plays an instrument". Find a different colleague for each square.
  3. Common Ground: in small teams, find five things you all have in common that are not obvious. Same job doesn't count.
  4. Team quiz: four to six people per team, one answer sheet, five rounds. Mix general knowledge with a round about the company. Questions in our trivia questions.
  5. Desert Island: each person picks three things to bring to a desert island, then the team has to agree on just five for everyone.
  6. Speed questions: pairs get two minutes with one icebreaker question, then one side of the room moves along.

Group games for big parties

6
  1. Murder mystery party: every guest gets a character and secrets ahead of time. Over dinner the clues come out and the group works out who did it.
  2. Rock Paper Scissors tournament: everyone pairs up. Losers become the loud fan club of whoever beat them, until two players are left with a screaming crowd each.
  3. Survey Says: the host asks the room questions in advance, like "name something you do before a date", then teams guess the most common answers.
  4. Lip sync battle: pairs pick a song and perform it without singing a note. The crowd votes with applause.
  5. Flip cup relay: two teams in lines. Drink a small pour, then flip your cup from the edge of the table until it lands upside down, then the next player goes. Any drink works, water counts.
  6. Human Knot: groups of 8 to 12 stand in a circle and grab two random hands. Untangle into one circle without letting go.

How to run a group game that people actually join

The rules are rarely the problem. The problem is the five minutes before the game, when half the room is still talking. This is how to get everyone in.

  1. Pick for the room, not for yourselfCount people, check the space and the mood. A quiet dinner wants Imposter, a garden full of people wants Kubb.
  2. Explain in 30 secondsSay the goal first, then the one rule that matters. Everything else people learn by playing.
  3. Play a practice roundRun one round that doesn't count. It is faster than any explanation and nobody feels stupid.
  4. Make teams fastCount off around the room instead of picking captains. Nobody wants to be picked last at 30.
  5. Stop while it is still funEnd a game at its peak and switch to the next. Three good 15 minute games beat one long one.

Group games that run themselves

In Imposter the phone hands out the secret word, so nobody has to sit out as the game master. Dronk has 16 party games in one app, and in LIVE mode up to 16 players join from their own phones with a pin code.

Questions people ask

What are good group games for adults?

Mafia, Fishbowl and Imposter work for almost any adult group, because everyone plays at once and nobody needs to perform alone. For big groups, a team quiz or a Rock Paper Scissors tournament gets 30 people involved in minutes.

What group games need no props?

Wink Murder, Mafia, Charades, Two Truths and a Lie, Paranoia, Never Have I Ever, Zip Zap Zop and Ninja need nothing but people.

How do you play a murder mystery as a group game?

Each guest gets a character with a few secrets before the party. During the evening, clues are revealed round by round, and at the end everyone names who they think the murderer is before the killer confesses.

What are good team building games for work?

The Marshmallow Challenge, Human Bingo, Common Ground and a team quiz all work at work events because they mix people and need no acting. Keep the questions work safe and let people opt out of anything physical.

What group games work for 20 or 30 people?

Split into teams. A team quiz, Survey Says, a Rock Paper Scissors tournament and a photo scavenger hunt all scale to 30 people without anyone standing around.

Can you play group games on your phones?

Yes. In Dronk, Imposter and The Bomb run on one phone you pass around, and The Quiz, Most Likely To and Would You Rather let up to 16 players join from their own phones with a 4 digit pin.

Keep the night going
