How to play two truths and a lie
The game takes ten seconds to explain, which is why it is the classic icebreaker for work, school and parties. You need three or more players and nothing else.
- Think of three statementsEach player thinks of two true things about themselves and one lie. Take a minute, or draw an idea from the card above.
- Say them in any orderThe first player says all three statements out loud. Don't put the lie last every time, people notice.
- Everyone guessesThe other players ask up to three questions in total, then vote on which statement is the lie. Hold up one, two or three fingers on the count of three.
- Reveal and scoreThe player reveals the lie. Everyone who guessed right gets a point. If nobody guessed it, the liar gets two points.
- Next playerThe turn passes to the left. Play one round each, or until someone reaches ten points.
| Classic | Party version | Team version | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guessing right | 1 point | The liar takes a sip | 1 point for the team |
| Fooling everyone | 2 points | Everyone else takes a sip | 2 points for the team |
| Questions allowed | 3 in total | As many as you like | Teams talk it over, 30 seconds |
| Best for | Work, school, first day | Pre parties and friends | Big groups and video calls |

How to tell a good lie in two truths and a lie
A good lie is not the most outrageous one. It is the one that sounds as normal as your truths. These five tricks make you much harder to read:
- Make your truths weird. If one of your truths is genuinely strange, everyone guesses it is the lie. That is the oldest trick in the game.
- Make your lie boring. "I am allergic to kiwi" is believable because nobody would bother making it up.
- Add a detail. "I won a pie eating contest when I was twelve" sounds truer than "I won a pie eating contest".
- Lie about something close to the truth. If you have been to 12 countries, say 20. Questions will not trip you up.
- Keep the same face. Say all three in the same tone and at the same speed. Most liars rush the lie.
