How to play This or That

This or That is the fastest party game there is. No points needed, but a scoring version is below if your group likes to win.

  1. Pick a readerOne person holds the phone and draws a card. The role moves to the left after every question.
  2. Read it outRead both options, then count to three. No thinking time is the whole point.
  3. Point left or rightOn three, everyone points left for the first option or right for the second. In a big room, people walk to one wall or the other.
  4. The minority explainsThe side with the fewest people gets ten seconds to defend their choice. If it is a tie, the reader decides who goes first.
  5. Keep it fastTen to twenty questions per round. If a question starts a real debate, let it run, then draw the next one.

Scoring version

Before each question, one player guesses which side the majority will pick. Right guess, one point. First to five points wins and picks the next group of questions.

This or That vs Would You Rather

The two games look alike, but they play very differently. This or That is about taste and speed. Would You Rather is about dilemmas, and the good ones take a while to answer.

Ways to play This or That

  • Lightning round. The reader fires off ten questions without stopping. Everyone writes their answers, then compares at the end.
  • Stand up, sit down. For classrooms and teams: stand for this, stay seated for that. No talking needed.
  • Guess my answer. Pick one player. Everyone else guesses what they will choose, and gets a point for each right guess.
  • Instagram story. Post five questions as polls and see which friends answer the same as you.

Questions people ask

What are good this or that questions?

Good this or that questions have two options that split a room roughly in half, like "Coffee or tea?", "Beach or mountains?" or "Early bird or night owl?" This page has 150 of them in seven groups.

How do you play This or That?

One person reads two options and counts to three. Everyone points left for the first option or right for the second, and the smallest group explains its choice. Then the next person reads.

What are funny this or that questions?

Questions with a silly or awkward twist get the biggest laughs, like "Socks in bed or no socks in bed?", "Matching outfits: cute or cringe?" or "Your search history or your camera roll made public?"

What are this or that questions for couples?

Try "Big wedding or elope?", "Good morning text or good night text?" or "Talk it out tonight or sleep on it?" The Relationships group has 20 of them.

What is the difference between This or That and Would You Rather?

This or That uses two short options and fast answers. Would You Rather gives two full scenarios with a catch, so each question takes longer and starts a bigger debate.

How many players do you need?

Two is enough for a couple or a road trip. The game gets better with five or more, because the room splits and someone always ends up alone on one side.
