01 — DefinitionWhat is Truth or Dare?
Truth or Dare is a turn-based party game. On your turn you choose truth, and answer a question honestly, or dare, and do a challenge the group can see. Then it's the next player's turn. The game is as old as sleepovers, and the reason it survives is simple: everyone in the room has at least one story they'd rather not tell and one thing they'd never do sober, and this game finds both.
The problem with the classic version is that people have to invent the questions, which means the same three get recycled and the loudest player ends up targeting whoever they want. The Dronk version fixes that: the phone draws the card from a shuffled pack, and the question is the question. Nobody picked on you. And if it's too much, you say no and take the penalty, no argument.
In the app the mode is called Truth or Dare, with the tagline "Answer honestly, or do the dare." The Danish version of the same mode is Sandhed eller Konsekvens.
02 — RulesHow to play Truth or Dare (step by step)
Four screens and one escape hatch. The app shuffles the deck; you supply the nerve.
-
1Pick a pack and agree on the penalty
Three packs: The Classics is free and checked by default; Daring and Spicy unlock with Premium. Before you tap Play, agree on what the penalty is for saying no. It should sting a little, but never be worse than the dare.
-
2Whoever holds the phone picks Truth or Dare
Card 1: the screen asks "Truth or Dare?" with two buttons, Truth (answer honestly) and Dare (do the dare). The player holding the phone taps one. No skipping turns: the whole point is that everyone gets their moment.
-
3Truth: answer out loud
Tap Truth and the app draws a question from the pack: "What's the most childish thing you still do when nobody's watching?" Answer honestly in front of everyone, or say no and take the penalty. Then tap Next and pass the phone on.
-
4Dare: do it now, or take the penalty
Tap Dare and you get a challenge instead: "Do your best impression of someone in the room — the others guess who it is." Do it right there, or take the penalty your group agreed on. Both are valid moves. Next, pass the phone, and the next player picks.
Three truths in a row and your next turn is a mandatory dare. It stops the one friend who always picks truth and answers with "I don't know" from coasting through the whole night.

That's the full English catalog: 75 truths and 75 dares. Each pack is shuffled separately in the app, and when a deck runs out it reshuffles, so a long night never stalls. The Danish app has its own set on the Danish page.
04 — PenaltiesWhat happens when you say no
Dronk never defines the penalty. Every game in the app ends the same way, someone takes the penalty, and what that means is up to your group. For Truth or Dare, the penalty needs to be mild enough that saying no is a real option and annoying enough that people don't say no to everything. Some penalties that work:
- The group picks a smaller dare. You refused the card, so you get something easier that the table chooses. Usually a compliment round or a bad impression.
- Tell a story instead. Most embarrassing moment of the last year, 30 seconds, no skipping details.
- Lose your next choice. Say no now, and on your next turn the group decides truth or dare for you.
- The physical one. Ten push-ups, a plank until the next card, or the classic: sing the chorus of whatever's playing.
Several cards in the Daring and Spicy packs build the penalty in directly ("or take two penalties", "or take three penalties"). Those numbers are the app's way of saying: this one is optional, and the price of skipping it is higher.
Truth or Drink is the bar-table variant of this game, with its own conventions. We wrote a separate guide for it: Truth or Drink: 200 questions and rules. This page is about the Dronk mode, where the penalty is yours to define.
05 — TipsHow to run a good round of Truth or Dare
Match the pack to the room, not to your own nerve
The Classics is safe for a family cabin weekend. Daring assumes everyone is single-ish or comfortable talking about dating. Spicy assumes adults who already know each other's business. The most common mistake is one confident person picking Spicy for a table that wanted Daring. Start one level lower than you think and move up.
Dares are better than truths after midnight
Early in the night, truths carry the game because people still have things to reveal. Late in the night, everyone has heard everyone's stories, and the dares (toasts, impressions, messages sent live) are what keep the energy up. If the room is fading, make the next three cards dares.
Phone dares need one rule: the group approves the recipient
A lot of dares in Daring and Spicy involve texting someone. The app writes it into the card ("the group sees the name before you send"). Keep that rule. Nobody should end the night with a message they can't explain to someone who wasn't in the room.
Counter-intuitively, a real escape hatch makes people braver. When you know you can bail, you pick dare more often. When you can't, you pick truth and mumble. The penalty gives the "no" a cost without making it a catastrophe.
06 — FAQTruth or Dare: frequently asked questions
What are good truth or dare questions?
A good truth question has an answer the person would rather not say but can say in ten seconds: last Google search, honest first impression of the person next to you, the most embarrassing text sent to the wrong person. A good dare is specific, finishes in under a minute and involves the room: a toast, an impression, a message sent live. Everything on this page follows those two rules.
How do you play truth or dare?
One player picks truth or dare, the group gives them a question or a challenge, and they either do it or take the penalty. Then the next player goes. In the Dronk app the phone draws the card from a shuffled pack, so nobody has to think up questions and nobody gets targeted.
Can you refuse a truth or a dare?
Yes, always. In Dronk the rule is written into the mode: you can say no and take the penalty instead. Your group decides what the penalty is before you start. A dare nobody can refuse isn't a game, it's a hostage situation.
Is there a truth or dare app?
Yes. Dronk has a Truth or Dare mode with 75 truth questions and 75 dares in English, split into three packs: The Classics (free), Daring and Spicy (premium). It's pass-and-play on one iPhone, no account needed.
Are there truth or dare questions for adults?
The Spicy pack is adults only, and the Daring pack is dating-and-crush territory. Both are premium in the app. The Classics pack is safe enough for a family cabin weekend.
How many players do you need for truth or dare?
Three is plenty, and the game works up to around 20 as long as everyone gets a turn. Truth or Dare in Dronk is pass-and-play only: you hand the phone to whoever's turn it is. It isn't one of the LIVE pin-code games.
Is truth or dare the same as truth or drink?
Truth or Drink is the bar-table variant of the same game, with its own conventions. Dronk uses penalties instead, and your group chooses what those are. We have a separate guide for the classic version, linked in the penalties section above.
Is the app free?
Yes. Dronk is free on the App Store with no account and no ads in the round. The Classics pack (25 truths, 25 dares) is free. Dronk Premium unlocks Daring and Spicy plus every pack in the other 13 games.
