Truth or Drink
200 Questions Worth Asking
Truth or Drink is the verbal version of Truth or Dare: every question gives you two choices — answer honestly, or take a drink. There's no third door. Below: 200 hand-crafted questions in six categories (mild, spicy, couples, friends, 18+, deep), the full rules, and the small host tricks that turn a flat round into the night people are still talking about.
"What's a friendship you've ghosted and never explained?"
What is Truth or Drink?
Truth or Drink is a question-based party game for 2 or more players. One person asks a question, the next person picks: answer truthfully, or take a drink. There is no third option, no partial answer, no "I'd rather not say" without the drink. The questions get progressively riskier as the night goes on — and what people choose to drink on becomes its own story.
The format spread out of dorm rooms in the early 2010s and was popularized by the Cut's Truth or Drink YouTube series, which paired strangers, exes, parents and kids across a table and let the questions do the work. Today it's the most common verbal-only drinking game at dinner parties, pre-parties and date nights — partly because the rules fit on a napkin, mostly because it works.
How is it different from Truth or Dare?
Truth or Drink replaces "Dare" with the option to take a drink instead of answering. It's verbal-only — no chasing the chicken across the yard, no public embarrassment. That makes it portable, dinner-party-safe, and far more revealing: the questions go deeper because the alternative is just sipping a drink, not running outside in a Halloween costume.
| Truth or Drink | Truth or Dare | |

| Dinner party safe | Yes | Risky |
How to play, in four lines
- Pick a question source — a list (like the 200 below), a deck, or a phone. Agree on which categories are in play.
- Pick a starting asker. Closest birthday, the host, or anyone who volunteers.
- The asker reads a question to the next player clockwise. That player picks: answer honestly, or take a drink. No half-answers.
- The player who was just asked becomes the next asker. Continue until the table calls it. Most groups play 30 to 45 minutes; that's about 12–20 questions per round at 6 players.
Give every player one "pass" per round, no drink required. Without it, the only way out of a question is to drink — which gets the same result but with social pressure. With a pass, harder categories (Adults, Deep) become safe to include.

How to host a Truth or Drink night that actually goes somewhere
The difference between a flat round of Truth or Drink and the night people are still talking about a year later isn't the questions — it's the host. Three small choices most people don't make:
1. Pre-pick your category mix
Before anyone sits down, decide which categories are in play. A good mix for a casual night is 40% Mild, 40% Spicy, 20% Friends. For a couples night: 30% Mild, 70% Couples. For a late-night "drinks-and-vulnerable" round: 50% Spicy, 30% Adults, 20% Deep. Mixing in Deep too early kills momentum; mixing it in too late is when it earns its keep.
2. Set a question budget per round
Cap rounds at 12 questions for 6 players, 18 for 8 players. Without a cap, the energy drains as everyone gets their fourth question. With a cap, the round ends on a high — and the table will ask for another round, which is much better than having to extract one.
3. Establish the pass rule out loud
Announce it before the first question: "everyone gets one pass per round, no drink, no questions asked." This sounds small but transforms the social dynamic. Without it, harder questions get drink-skipped silently and resentfully. With it, players actually engage with the harder ones because they know they have an out if it gets too much.
If the energy ever flatlines, switch the asker direction (counter-clockwise instead of clockwise) and ask whoever's currently the most reserved player to pick the next question. The reserved player will pick something they've been quietly thinking about — and it's almost always a great question.
Truth or Drink: frequently asked questions
What is Truth or Drink?
Truth or Drink is a question-based party game where each player picks: answer the question truthfully, or take a drink. There's no third option, no half-answer. The game works for 2 or more players, plays in 15 to 60 minutes, and needs only a list of questions and a drink each.
How is it different from Truth or Dare?
Truth or Drink replaces "Dare" with the option to take a drink instead of answering. It's verbal-only — no acting, no chasing the chicken across the yard. It plays better at dinner parties and pre-parties because it doesn't require space, props, or anyone's living-room being a stage.
How many players do you need?
Two is the minimum (the couples version works great at two). Five to eight is the social sweet spot. Above ten, the rounds get long — split into two circles of five, or use a timer per question.
Can you play without alcohol?
Yes. Replace the drink with anything that creates a small forfeit — a hot sauce shot, a push-up, a forfeit jar contribution. The game works because choosing the forfeit is itself revealing — the questions don't need alcohol to do their job.
What makes a good Truth or Drink question?
A good question is specific, surprising, and answerable in one or two sentences. Generic questions ("what's your biggest fear?") get generic answers. Specific questions ("what's the smallest thing that's ever made you cry?") get real ones. Specificity also makes the "drink" option more revealing — the drinker is choosing not to answer this exact question, which is itself a tell.
Should there be rules about which questions are off-limits?
Set a "pass" rule before you start: each player gets one pass per round, no questions asked. Without a pass, players default to drinking on anything they don't want to answer, which gets the same result without the social pressure. Pass rules also make harder categories (Adults, Deep) safer to include.
Is it good for couples?
Yes — there's an entire category dedicated to it. Couples Truth or Drink works as a structured way to ask the questions you've been meaning to ask but haven't. Use the Couples list, set a 30-minute timer, and don't take answers personally — the questions are designed to surface things, not weaponize them.
How long does a game last?
Plan for 30–45 minutes. Each question takes 1–3 minutes to ask, choose, answer (or drink), and react to. With 6 players that's about 12 questions per 30 minutes — enough to get somewhere without dragging.
200 questions. One drink. Pick a round.
You've got the questions, the rules, and the host tricks. When the night needs a different tempo, Dronk is in your pocket.
