01 — DefinitionWhat is Would You Rather?
Would You Rather is a question game built on impossible choices: two options, and you have to pick one. "Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?" On its own that's a conversation starter. It becomes a party game the moment you add a vote and a consequence. Everyone commits to A or B at the same time, the split is revealed, and whoever is on the smaller side takes the penalty.
That minority rule is what keeps the game moving. You're not just choosing what you'd rather do, you're guessing what the room will do, and the person who confidently picks "invisible" while nine others pick "fly" has to own it. The best questions are the ones where the table splits close to 50/50, because then every vote is a gamble.
In the Dronk app the mode is called Would You Rather? and its one-line description is exactly that: "A or B? The minority takes the penalty." The Danish version of the same mode is Hvad vil du helst.
02 — RulesHow to play Would You Rather (with a phone or without)
Two screens on one phone. Go LIVE and you get two more, shown in the LIVE section below.
-
1Pick how you play and a pack
The setup screen asks two things. Top: One phone (pass it around) or LIVE (everyone picks A/B from their own phone with a pin). Below: the pack. The Classics is free and already checked; Funny, Deep and Spicy unlock with Premium. Agree on the penalty, then tap Play.
-
2Read the card, everyone commits, minority takes the penalty
The phone shows one dilemma at a time: "Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?" Read it out loud, count to three, and everyone says A or B at the same time. Count the room: the smaller side takes the penalty. If it's a perfect tie, everyone takes it (house rule) or you re-vote. Tap Next for the next card.
Add a 10-second "defend your answer" round before the reveal. The person who argues hardest for the losing side takes a double penalty. It slows the game slightly but doubles the arguing, which is the point.

04 — LIVEWould You Rather LIVE: everyone votes from their own phone
Passing one phone around works fine for six people. At twelve it gets slow, and by sixteen someone is always holding the phone hostage. That's what Dronk LIVE is for.
- The host creates a room in the app and gets a 4-digit pin code.
- Everyone joins from their own iPhone by typing the pin. Joining is always free, and guests don't need an account.
- Up to 16 players per room. Premium packs are unlocked for the whole room if the host has Premium.
Then every question runs through two screens:
-
1Everyone picks on their own phone
In a LIVE room every phone shows the same two options, "Be able to fly" or "Be invisible", and each player taps their pick in secret. The host sees how many have voted ("1/4 have chosen") and can tap Reveal now if someone is stalling.
-
2The split lands on every screen
The reveal shows both sides with names and percentages: "Be able to fly" 3 votes, 75% (Olivia, Mia, Tyler) against "Be invisible" 1 vote, 25% (Jake). The smaller side is marked Penalty time! Then the host taps Next round.
LIVE is the difference between a would you rather list and a would you rather game at a real party: nobody has to wait for the phone, nobody can change their vote after seeing the room, and the reveal lands on sixteen screens at once.
05 — TipsHow to make would you rather actually fun
Start with Classics, escalate on purpose
The packs are ordered for a reason. Classics warms up a table that doesn't know each other. Funny is where people loosen up. Deep works once the room has shrunk to the people who'll stay till 2am. Spicy is for a group that has already seen each other at their worst. Skipping straight to Spicy with coworkers is how you end up with a very quiet Uber home.
Make people defend the unpopular pick
The reveal is only half the fun. Ask the one person who picked "10 million in ten years" why. Give them 20 seconds. The argument is the game; the vote is just how you start it.
Set the penalty before the first question
Whatever your group's penalty is, agree on it once and don't renegotiate. Dronk never defines the penalty for you. A good default: the minority does something the majority picks, and a few Spicy questions come with a built-in option to take several penalties instead of answering.
Without a consequence, would you rather is a podcast. With the minority rule, every question is a small bet on what your friends will do, and being wrong costs you. That's why the app reveals the split instead of just the question.
06 — FAQWould You Rather: frequently asked questions
What are good would you rather questions?
Good would you rather questions have two options that feel equally bad, or equally good, so the table actually splits. "Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?" works because both sides have a real argument. A question where 90% pick the same answer is a dud, unless the point is to catch the 10%.
How do you play would you rather as a game?
Read a question out loud, everyone commits to A or B on a count of three, then the side with fewer people takes the penalty. The split is what makes it a game instead of a conversation. In the Dronk app the phone shows both options, the group votes, and the minority side is revealed.
Is there a would you rather app?
Yes. Dronk has a Would You Rather mode with 120 English questions in 4 packs. It runs on one phone that you pass around, or LIVE where everyone votes from their own phone using a 4-digit pin code. The Classics pack is free; Funny, Deep and Spicy are premium.
Are there would you rather questions for adults?
The Spicy pack is written for adults: exes, crushes, texts sent to the wrong person, body counts. The Deep pack is adult in a different way, with questions about regret, love and money. Both are premium packs in the app.
How many players do you need?
Three is the minimum for a real minority, and the game gets better with more. Local pass-and-play supports 3 to 20 players. LIVE rooms hold up to 16 players, each voting on their own phone.
Is Would You Rather a drinking game?
It's often played as one, but Dronk doesn't tell you what a penalty is. Your group agrees on the penalty before you start: a dare, a song, a story, a push-up, whatever fits the room. Everything on this page works with or without alcohol.
Is the app free?
Yes. Dronk is free on the App Store, with no account and no ads during play. The Classics pack (30 questions) is included for free. Dronk Premium unlocks the other three packs plus every category in the other 13 games.
Can I play would you rather over the phone or remotely?
The LIVE mode is built for one room, but it technically works anywhere with a connection: the host shares the pin code, everyone joins from their own phone, and the reveal shows up on every screen at the same time. Pair it with a video call and it works.
