How to play Never Have I Ever

The rules fit in four lines, and that is why the game works at almost any table. Decide two things before you start: whether you play with fingers or sips, and whether the Spicy round is in or out.

  2. Say something you have never doneThe first player starts with "Never have I ever" and finishes the sentence with something true about themselves, or reads a card from this page.

Variations that keep it fresh

After a few rounds the classic format can go flat. These tweaks change the rhythm without changing the game.

  • Three fingers, fast rounds. Everyone starts with three. Rounds last five minutes, so new players can jump in without waiting.
  • Prove it. Whoever puts a finger down first has to tell the story in one sentence. The table votes on whether it counts.
  • Targeted questions. Allowed only in groups that know each other well: you pick a statement you know one person has done. Use with care, the point is laughter, not exposing anyone.
  • Mix with Most Likely To. After each finger down, the table answers who in the room is most likely to have done it worse.

How to write a good Never Have I Ever question

The best questions are true for roughly a third to half of the table. If nobody has done it, nothing happens. If everyone has, nobody talks about it. Three things help:

  • Be specific. "Never have I ever lost my shoes on a night out" beats "never have I ever been drunk", because it comes with a story.
  • Ask about things, not people. Statements about events land better than ones aimed at someone in the room.
  • Read the room. Mixed groups and colleagues stay in Classic, Funny and Travel. Spicy and Deep are for people who chose them.
