How to host a trivia night
All you need is a host, some pens and a sheet of paper per team. The format below works for a living room with six friends and for an office party with forty.
- Make teams of two to fiveSmall teams keep everyone talking. Each team picks a name and numbers a sheet from 1 to 15 for every round.
- Pick your roundsFour rounds take about 45 minutes, all eight about 90. Switch off the rounds you skip in the card above so it only draws from the ones you play.
- Read every question twiceGive teams around 30 seconds per question. No phones on the table during a round, the honour system works better when the phones are face down.
- Swap sheets and markAfter each round, teams mark another team's sheet while you read the answers out. Write the scores on a big sheet everyone can see.
- Save a deciderKeep one number question in your pocket for a tie, like the number of minutes in a day (1,440). The team closest wins.
| Situation | Points | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Correct answer | 1 point | Easy to mark and quick to add up |
| Right answer, wrong spelling | Full point | The host decides, and the host is always right |
| Joker round, chosen before it starts | Double points | Lets each team bet on its strongest subject |
| Final round | Double points | Keeps the team in last place in the game until the end |
| Tie at the end | Closest number wins | No sudden death that drags on |
Play the quiz live on everyone's phone
In Dronk's The Quiz, the host shares a 4 digit pin code, up to 16 players join from their own phones and everyone answers at the same time. The fastest correct answer scores most, and a podium crowns the winner. Packs for music hits, movies and series, brands and logos, and geography and flags.

Which rounds suit which crowd
The questions above are general knowledge level, the kind a curious adult or a sharp 12 year old can get. Some rounds lean easier than others, so pick rounds for the people in the room.
| Crowd | Best rounds | Skip or shorten |
|---|---|---|
| Friends at home | Film and TV, Music, Food and drink, Sports | Nothing, run all eight |
| Office party | General knowledge, Geography, Food and drink | Sports, if half the room doesn't follow it |
| Hard core quiz team | History, Geography, Music, Science and nature | Play only the last eight questions of each round |
- Easy first, hard last. Every round starts with questions nearly everyone gets, so nobody is on zero after the first five minutes.
- Answers you can check. The questions are about things that don't change, no current champions, no records that get broken next year.
- Write your own extras. One or two questions about the people in the room, like where the host went on their last holiday, always get the biggest laugh.
Questions people ask
What are good trivia questions?
Good trivia questions have one clear answer, are about things that don't change, and are known by about half the room. For example: which is the only letter that does not appear in the name of any US state (Q), and how many hearts does an octopus have (three).
