How to play charades

Charades is the party game where you act out a word without speaking while your team guesses it. The rules are simple, and the generator above takes care of the two things that usually slow a game down: thinking up words and keeping time.

  1. Split into two teamsThree to six players per team is ideal. Teams sit on opposite sides of the room so everyone can see the actor.
  2. The actor draws a wordOne player from the first team takes the phone, presses New word and keeps the screen hidden from everyone else.
  3. Show the category and the number of wordsStart with the gesture for the category, like cranking a camera for a movie, then hold up fingers for the number of words.
  4. Press start and actYou have one minute. No talking, no mouthing words and no pointing at things in the room that spell it out. Sounds are allowed only if your group agrees on it first.
  5. Score and swapIf your team guesses it before the timer ends, you get a point. Then the phone goes to the other team, and every player acts at least once a game.

Charades gestures everyone should know

These signals are the shared language of the game. Go through them before the first round, especially with new players, so the guessing starts in the first seconds.

How to keep score with teams

Same clock, no acting required

In Dronk's The Bomb, the phone shows a category, you say an answer and pass it on before the hidden fuse blows somewhere between 15 and 45 seconds. Seven packs and 350 categories, on one phone for any number of players.

Charades variations

Once everyone knows the gestures, change the format to keep the game fresh.

  • Forehead charades. The guesser holds the phone to their forehead with the word facing out, and the team acts it out together.
  • Reverse charades. The whole team acts and one player guesses. Louder, faster and better with big groups.
  • One word only. No titles, just the Actions and Animals categories. Perfect for kids and for the first round.
  • Christmas charades. Switch every category off except Christmas and play after dinner. Untangling the fairy lights is always a crowd favourite.
  • Freeze frame. The actor gets five seconds to strike one pose and then freezes. No movement allowed after that.

Questions people ask

How do you play charades?

Split into two teams. One player draws a word, shows the category with a gesture and acts the word out without speaking. If their team guesses it within the time limit, usually one minute, they score a point. Then the other team plays.

What are good charades ideas?

Good charades ideas have a clear pose or scene, like Jaws, Thriller, Flipping pancakes or Santa stuck in the chimney. The generator on this page has 180 of them in eight categories.

What are the hand signals in charades?

Crank a camera for a movie, open your hands like a book for a book, draw a rectangle for a TV show, hold up fingers for the number of words, and tug your ear for sounds like.

Can you make sounds in charades?

In the classic game, no. Many groups allow sounds but no words, which makes animals and songs easier. Agree on the rule before you start.

What are good Christmas charades?

Santa stuck in the chimney, Untangling the fairy lights, Kissing under the mistletoe and Unwrapping socks you didn't want always work. Turn on only the Christmas category to play 25 of them.

Is this about the 1963 film Charade?

No, this page is about the party game charades. The 1963 film is called Charade, singular, and stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.
