Heads Up game
The Heads Up game is a guessing game where you hold a phone to your forehead with a word on it that everyone can see except you. Your friends describe it, you guess as many words as you can before the timer runs out, and the most correct answers wins.

The screen faces your friends, so they can read the word and tap Got it or Pass for you. All 250 words are listed below too.
You can play it right here, free and with nothing to download: pick categories and a time, press Start and put the phone on your forehead. A friend taps Got it or Pass for you, and you see your score and every word at the end.

How to play Heads Up
Heads Up takes about thirty seconds to explain, which is why it works at any party. One person guesses, everyone else gives clues, and the timer keeps it fast.
- Pick the guesserChoose categories on the card above and a round time. The guesser takes the phone and presses Start.
- Phone on your foreheadDuring the 3, 2, 1 countdown, the guesser holds the phone to their forehead with the screen facing the group. From now on, only the others can see the word.
- Describe, sing or act itThe group shouts clues. You may describe the word, act it out, hum the song or do an impression. You may not say the word itself or spell it.
- Got it or passWhen the guesser says the word, a friend taps Got it and the next word appears. If it is impossible, tap Pass. There is no penalty for passing, but every second counts.
- Count and rotateWhen time is up, the card shows the score and every word from the round. Hand the phone to the next player. Highest score after everyone has played wins.
Heads Up variants for every group
The phone version is only one way to play. These variants use the same words, so you can switch whenever the group needs something new.
- Who am I with sticky notes. Everyone writes a famous name on a sticky note and puts it on the forehead of the person to their left. Take turns asking yes or no questions about yourself until you guess who you are. Slower and great over dinner.
- Charades only. Nobody may speak. The group acts out every word in silence, which makes Movies and Actions twice as funny.
- Team battle. Split into two teams. Each team gets one round per player and adds up the points. Only your own team may give clues.
- Sing it. With the Songs category, clue givers may only hum or sing the tune, never say the lyrics or the title.
- One word clues. Each clue giver may only say one word per turn, going round the circle. Hard, and very loud.
- Drinking version. Every pass is a sip, and whoever scores lowest picks the next category. Water counts just as much, and nobody has to drink.
| Your group | Play this | Best categories |
|---|---|---|
| 3 to 5 friends on a sofa | Classic phone version | Famous people, Movies, Songs |
| Big party, 10 or more | Team battle | Mix every category |
| Dinner table | Who am I with sticky notes | Famous people, Characters |
| Loud and silly | Charades only | Actions, Animals, Movies |
| Music fans | Sing it | Songs |
| People who just met | Classic phone version with 90 seconds | Food, Animals, Brands |
Another round on the same phone
In Dronk's The Bomb, the phone shows a category, you say an answer and pass it on before the hidden fuse goes off. 350 categories in 7 packs, and Dronk has 16 party games in one app, so the phone you just played Heads Up on has plenty more.

How to give better clues
Most rounds are lost by the clue givers, not the guesser. Three habits double the score.
- Category first. Shout "Movie!" or "Singer!" before anything else. It cuts the guesses down instantly.
- Use the people in the room. "The film we watched at Sara's birthday" beats a plot summary every time.
- One person talks. Five people shouting five different clues is noise. Take turns, or let whoever has the best clue go first.
- Rhymes and fill in the blank. "Hey ___" gets Hey Jude in two seconds. Saying a word that rhymes is allowed, saying the word is not.
Questions people ask
How do you play the Heads Up game?
One player holds a phone to their forehead so everyone else can see the word. The group gives clues by describing, acting or singing, and the player guesses as many words as possible in 60 or 90 seconds. The most correct guesses wins.
Can I play Heads Up for free?
Yes. The game on this page is free and runs in your browser with 250 words in 8 categories. Pick categories, press Start and hold the phone to your forehead.
How many people do you need to play Heads Up?
Three is enough: one guesser and two clue givers. It is most fun with four to eight, and with more people you can split into teams.
Is there a Heads Up board game?
There are boxed card versions of the same idea, but you don't need one. A phone and the word list on this page do the same job, and you can switch categories between rounds.
What is the difference between Heads Up and Who Am I?
It is the same guessing idea. In Heads Up the clue givers describe the word against a timer. In Who Am I, everyone wears a name on a sticky note and asks yes or no questions in turns, with no timer.
Is Heads Up the same as Heads Up Seven Up?
No. Heads Up Seven Up is a different group game: seven players stand up front while everyone else puts their heads down with one thumb up. Each of the seven quietly presses one thumb, and the players whose thumbs were pressed then guess who did it. A right guess swaps places.
