Murder mystery party ideas
The best murder mystery party ideas start with a setting everyone can dress up for, like a 1920s speakeasy, a vineyard launch or a reality TV villa, and a victim the whole room had a reason to dislike. Below are 25 themes with a one line setup each, a plan for hosting one at home, and a complete free mystery for 6 to 8 adults that you can run tonight.
Every theme has a setting, a victim and a hook. Pair it with the hosting plan further down, or play the free mystery that comes with the vineyard theme.
Draw a card to let the deck pick a theme, or switch off the groups that don't fit your night. Every theme works as a dinner party: three courses, three rounds of clues, one murderer.

How to host a murder mystery party
You play the detective (or the narrator) and run the evening. Your guests play the suspects. One of them is the murderer and knows it from the start, everyone else is trying to work out who.
- Pick a theme and a dateChoose one of the themes above and invite six to eight people. Fewer and there are not enough suspects, more and the quiet guests get lost.
- Send invites two to three weeks aheadSay the theme, the dress code and that everyone will get a character. Ask for dietary needs at the same time.
- Send each guest their character in privateOne paragraph: who they are, how they knew the victim, and their secret. Tell the murderer they did it, and nobody else.
- Prepare the cluesWrite each clue on a card and put them in three numbered envelopes, one per round. Evidence props like a torn letter or a cufflink make it feel real.
- Run the night in three roundsOpen one envelope per course, let people question each other between courses, and collect written accusations before dessert. Then reveal the solution.
Rules to read out at the start
- Stay in character all night, even when you go to get a drink.
- You may dodge questions and bend the truth about your secret. Only the murderer may lie outright about the murder.
- Clues are read out to everyone. What you do with them is up to you.
- Before dessert, everyone writes down who did it, how and why. Points for each part you get right.

Free murder mystery for 6 to 8 adults: The Last Toast
The setting: Laurent Estate, a vineyard, on the night the new vintage is launched. The victim: Victor Laurent, the owner, charming in public and impossible in private. At 9 pm he raises his engraved glass for a toast, takes a sip and collapses. The house doctor confirms it: Victor has been poisoned. Nobody leaves until the detective (the host) knows who did it.
Send each player the character below, and only their own. Six characters are needed, the seventh and eighth are optional. Do not read the solution out until the end.
The suspects
8- Celeste Laurent, Victor's wife. Elegant, sharp, tired of the vineyard. Wears an evening dress. Secret: she has an appointment with a divorce lawyer on Monday, and a divorce would leave her with far less than a will.
- Julian Laurent, Victor's son. Charming and broke. Wears a dark blazer. Secret: he owes money from poker, and Victor refused to help him this afternoon.
- Margot Fleury, the sommelier. Proud and precise. Wears black with a silver tastevin on a chain. Secret: she knows Victor sells cheap wine under the Laurent label, and he threatened to fire her if she ever talked.
- Dr. Henry Blake, Victor's doctor and oldest friend. Wears tweed. Secret: he lost his savings in Victor's last business deal, and he is the one who prescribes Victor's heart pills.
- Ruby Hart, a wine critic with a big following. Wears something loud. Secret: Victor paid her to write a glowing review of the new vintage, and her career is over if it comes out.
- Teddy Vance, Victor's business partner for twenty years. Loud, generous with the wine. Wears a dark blazer and cufflinks. Secret: this morning Victor signed papers to buy him out for almost nothing.
- Ivy Chen (optional 7th player), the event photographer. Wears all black with a camera. Secret: she sells photos of famous guests to a gossip site. She holds the photo in clue 9 and reveals it herself.
- Felix Moreau (optional 8th player), the estate manager. Wears the estate's green apron. Secret: he sells bottles from the cellar on the side, and the yearly stock count is next week.
Round 1 clues (with the starters)
4- The doctor's verdict: Victor swallowed a large dose of his own heart medicine, dissolved in his wine. Everyone else drank from the same bottle and is fine, so the poison was in his glass, not the bottle.
- Victor only ever drinks from his own engraved glass. Margot brought it up from the cellar at 8:50 pm, rinsed it at the bar in front of Ruby and Dr. Blake, and put it on the side table by the terrace door.
- Staff heard Julian and Victor shouting about money in the study at 4 pm.
- Victor kept a spare bottle of heart pills in the downstairs bathroom cabinet. Dr. Blake says it was full on Friday. Tonight it is empty.
Round 2 clues (with the main course)
4- At 8:55 pm the lights went out for two minutes. Someone switched off the fuse box, which is in the hallway right next to the downstairs bathroom.
- Celeste's phone shows a call to her lawyer from 8:49 to 8:58 pm. Two guests saw her pacing in the garden with the phone at her ear.
- On Victor's desk: the buyout papers, signed this morning and due to be filed on Monday. Under them, the old partnership agreement: if one partner dies, the other inherits the whole business.
- Ruby filmed a video for her followers on the terrace during the blackout. Dr. Blake is in it the whole time, holding up his phone torch for her.
Round 3 clues (before dessert)
3- A photo taken in the dark with a flash (Ivy's, if you have a seventh player) shows someone in a dark blazer bending over the side table. Tonight only Julian and Teddy wear dark blazers.
- Margot and Julian went down to the cellar together at 8:53 pm to fetch more champagne. They were still down there when the lights went out, and came up together when they came back on.
- On the edge of the downstairs bathroom sink: a trace of white powder, and a cufflink engraved T.V.
The solution
1For the host only. Read it out after everyone has written their accusation.
- Who killed Victor Laurent, and how?
Reveal the solution
Teddy Vance. The buyout would be filed on Monday, but if Victor died first, the old partnership agreement gave Teddy the whole estate. During the party he took Victor's spare pills from the downstairs bathroom and crushed them at the sink, where he lost a cufflink. At 8:55 pm he switched off the fuse box next to the bathroom, crossed to the side table in the dark and tipped the powder into the engraved glass. Celeste was on the phone in the garden, Ruby and Dr. Blake are on the terrace video, and Julian and Margot were in the cellar. The photo shows a dark blazer, which leaves Teddy.
Scoring: one point each for the right murderer, the right method and the right motive. Ties go to whoever spotted the cufflink first.

Food, outfit and decoration ideas
Food
- Food that waits for you. Lasagne, a pie or a slow cooked stew can sit in the oven while you run the clues. Avoid anything you need to stand over.
- Name the dishes after the story. "The Last Toast" bubbles, "Cellar door" cheese board, "Fuse box" brownies. It costs nothing and people photograph the menu.
- Match the era. Devilled eggs and martinis for the 1920s, prawn cocktail for the 1970s, sushi and mocktails for the influencer retreat.
Outfits and costumes
- Put the dress code in the character. "Wears a dark blazer" is easier to follow than "1920s formal". It also turns the clothes into clues.
- One prop per guest. A pocket watch, a feather boa, a camera or a fake moustache is enough to get someone in character.
- Halloween themes: capes, masks and fake fangs work for a vampire ball or a masquerade. No gore needed.
Decorations
- Candles and low light, which also make the blackout clue feel real.
- Place cards with each character's name, so guests learn who is who.
- Evidence bags or envelopes for the clues, and a case file folder for the detective.
- A playlist from the era of the theme, quiet enough to talk over.
Questions people ask
How do you host a murder mystery party?
Pick a theme, invite six to eight guests and send each of them a character with a secret, telling only the murderer that they did it. On the night, reveal three rounds of clues over three courses, let guests question each other, and collect accusations before dessert.
How many people do you need for a murder mystery party?
Six to eight guests plus a host is ideal. With fewer than six there are too few suspects, and above ten people start to drift off into side conversations.
How long does a murder mystery party last?
About three hours for a dinner party with three courses and three rounds of clues. A drinks only version without dinner can be done in 90 minutes.
Is there a free murder mystery game I can use?
Yes. The Last Toast on this page is a complete mystery for 6 to 8 adults with characters, secrets, three rounds of clues and the solution.
What are good murder mystery themes for adults?
A 1920s speakeasy, a casino night, a vineyard launch, a reality TV villa or a snowed in ski chalet. Themes with easy costumes and a victim everyone disliked work best.
Can I do a murder mystery for a birthday or Halloween?
Yes. For a birthday, let the birthday guest play the victim. For Halloween, try a vampire ball, a haunted hotel or a masquerade. Keep it playful, the fun is in the accusations, not the crime.
