Newlywed game questions

The newlywed game, also called Mr and Mrs, tests how well a couple knows each other: one partner answers newlywed game questions about the other, and you score a point every time the answers match. Here are 100 questions in six groups: about him, about her, about us, first times, funny ones and the shoe game.

About him100 cards

What's his go to order at a takeaway?

The host reads the card out, the couple answers, and the room keeps score. Switch on only Shoe game for the classic back to back round. All 100 are listed below too.

Draw the questions from the card on your phone, or press print for a sheet the host can read from at the wedding, the bridal shower or the anniversary party.

How to host the newlywed game

The newlywed game works at a wedding reception, a bridal shower, a hen or stag party, an engagement party and an anniversary. You need a host, a pen and one or more couples who are good sports.

  1. Collect one partner's answers firstBefore the party, the host asks one partner ten questions in private and writes the answers down. At a bridal shower, this is usually the groom, by phone or by text.
  2. Bring the other partner on stageThe host reads the same questions out loud, and the partner on stage has to guess what their other half said.
  3. Score the matchesOne point per matching answer. With several couples, give each couple the same ten questions and the highest score wins.
  4. Swap and play the shoe gameFor the last round, sit the couple back to back for the shoe game. Ten quick who questions, no preparation needed.
  5. Give a small prizeEven a homemade trophy works. At a wedding, the prize can be first dance on the floor or first in line at the cake.

Where the newlywed game comes from

The Newlywed Game started on American TV in 1966, with Bob Eubanks as the host for most of its run. Couples answered questions about each other, and the famous laughs came from the answers that didn't match. In the UK, the same idea ran as the TV show Mr and Mrs, which is why many people still call the party game by that name.

What makes good newlywed game questions

The best newlywed game questions are easy to answer but surprisingly hard to guess. That gap is where the laughs come from.

  • One word answers. "What's his comfort food?" can be scored. "Describe his personality" cannot.
  • Questions with a debate built in. "Who said I love you first?" often gets two different answers, and both partners will defend theirs.
  • Keep it family friendly. Grandparents are often in the room. If you want a cheekier round, save it for the hen or stag party.
  • Mix in a few sweet ones. A question like "What would she say is your best quality?" gives the couple a moment between the laughs.

Questions people ask

What are good newlywed game questions?

Good questions have short answers that are easy to score, like "Who said I love you first?", "What's his go to takeaway order?" or "What's her guilty pleasure TV show?" This page has 100 in six groups.

What are funny newlywed game questions?

Try "What would your partner's prison nickname be?", "Which animal does your partner turn into when they're hungry?" or "Which reality show would your partner win?" The Funny group has 15 of them.

How do you play the newlywed game at a bridal shower?

Ask the groom 15 to 20 questions before the shower and write down his answers. At the shower, the bride guesses what he said, and she scores a point for each match.

What is the shoe game at a wedding?

The couple sits back to back, each holding one of their own shoes and one of their partner's. The host asks who questions like "Who's the better driver?", and both raise the shoe of the person they mean.

Is Mr and Mrs the same as the newlywed game?

Yes. Mr and Mrs is the British name, after the TV show of the same name. The rules are the same: one partner guesses the other's answers.

Can friends play the newlywed game?

Yes. Best friends, flatmates or siblings can play the same way: one answers in private, the other guesses. Swap "him" and "her" for names and skip the questions about romance.
