Word association game

The word association game is simple: one player says a word, the next player says the first word it makes them think of, and the chain goes round the circle. Hesitate, repeat a word that was already said or give a link nobody can follow, and you are out.

Easy200 words

Sun

Read the starting word out loud, press Start and put the phone in the middle. The phone vibrates when the 30 seconds are up, on phones that support it.

The card gives you a random starting word from 200 in eight categories and a 30 second timer. Draw a word, press Start and go round the circle as fast as you can. Whoever is talking when the time runs out loses the round.

How to play the word association game

Word association needs no cards, no board and no setup. It is a perfect game for the car, a queue or the first ten minutes of a party, and it is also a fast way to find out how your friends' minds work.

  1. Sit in a circleThree players is enough, six to ten is best. Decide which direction the turn goes.
  2. Say the starting wordDraw a word from the card above and read it out. The first player says the first word that it makes them think of: Coffee, then Morning, then Alarm.
  3. Keep the chain movingEach player answers the word before them, not the starting word. Answer within about two seconds. Press Start on the card to play against the 30 second timer.
  4. Challenge a strange linkIf a link makes no sense, anyone can challenge. The player must explain it in one sentence, and the table votes on whether it counts.
  5. Lose a lifeYou lose the round if you hesitate, repeat a word already said in the round, fail a challenge or are talking when the timer ends. Three lost rounds and you are out. The last player in wins.

Word association variants

Once the classic chain feels easy, change the rule. Each of these plays very differently with the same starting words.

  • Word disassociation. The opposite game: say a word with no connection to the one before. If anyone at the table can find a link, you lose the round. Much harder than it sounds, because the brain links everything.
  • Chain to a target. Draw two words, a start and a target. The group must get from one to the other through associations, for example Coffee, Morning, Sunrise, Beach. Fewest steps wins.
  • Category lock. Every answer must stay inside one category, like food or famous people. Coffee, Croissant, Butter, Toast.
  • Letter lock. The answer must start with the last letter of the word before. Coffee, Egg, Garlic, Cheese. Slower, but nobody can coast.
  • Two second rule. Same as the classic game, but someone counts "one, two" out loud after each word. Zero tolerance.
  • Drinking version. Whoever loses the round takes a sip. Water counts just as much, nobody is forced, and the game is just as good sober.

Tips to last longer in the chain

  • Say the first thing. The game punishes thinking. The first word in your head is almost always good enough.
  • Use a picture. Imagine the word as a scene. Beach becomes a picture with sand, sun, a towel and an ice cream: four answers ready.
  • Avoid the dead ends. Very specific answers are hard for the next player. That is either kind or tactical, depending on how competitive you are.
  • Track the round. The most common way out is a repeat. If Sun was said, Summer is safer than Sunshine.

Word association with a fuse

In Dronk's The Bomb, the phone shows a category, you say an answer and pass the phone before the hidden fuse goes off somewhere between 15 and 45 seconds. 350 categories in 7 packs, so the chain never runs dry.

Questions people ask

How do you play the word association game?

Players sit in a circle. One says a word, and the next says the first word it makes them think of, then the next player answers that word, and so on. If you hesitate, repeat a word or give a link nobody accepts, you lose the round.

What is a good word to start word association?

Pick a word that opens many directions, like Beach, Coffee, Secret or Monday. Very specific words like Platypus end the chain fast. This page has 200 starting words in eight categories.

What is word disassociation?

The reverse of word association: each player must say a word with no connection to the previous one. If someone can name a link, the player loses the round.

Are there right answers in word association?

Not in the party game. Any word counts as long as the link makes sense to the table. Word association puzzle apps are different: they have fixed answers, and you group or connect words to solve a level.

How many people can play word association?

Two can play, but three to ten is best. With more than ten, split into two circles or play in teams where each team answers together.

Is word association a good icebreaker?

Yes. It takes ten seconds to explain, nobody needs to share anything personal, and the strange links people make get the room talking.
