How to ask get to know you questions without it feeling like an interview

The difference between a good chat and a job interview is rhythm. Ask, listen, share something back, then ask again.

  1. Start with one easy questionPick from First meeting or Quick fire. Easy questions build momentum, and momentum is what makes people open up.
  2. Swap answersAfter they answer, give your own. A get to know you question that only goes one way feels like a form.
  3. Follow the interesting bitIf they mention a sibling who lives in Japan, forget the next card and ask about the sibling.
  4. Go one level deeperOnce you're both laughing, move to Dating or New friends. Save anything personal for when they bring it up first.
  5. End on a light oneFinish with a multiple choice or quick fire question so the last thing you share is easy.

Get to know you questions in a group

These questions are built for one to one and small groups. With a bigger crowd, use a format where everyone answers fast. Our icebreaker questions cover games for whole rooms, but these three ideas work with the lists on this page:

  • Multiple choice show of hands. Read a multiple choice question and everyone holds up one to four fingers. You see the room's personality in ten seconds.
  • Quick fire pairs. Pair people up for two minutes of Quick fire, then swap partners.
  • Guess my answer. One person answers a question secretly, and the other person guesses before it's revealed. Great for couples who think they know everything already.
