Untappd app and the best Untappd alternatives
Untappd is still the best app for rating beer: check in what you drink, rate it, collect badges and see what your friends like. If that is what you want, keep it.
Every card says in one line what the app does. Switch off what you don't need and draw again.
If you want something else, pick by job: Vivino for wine, BeerMenus to find where a beer is on tap, and Dronk if you would rather remember the night with your friends than score each glass.

What is the Untappd app?
Untappd is a social drink rating app. You check in a beer, give it a score, add a photo and a place, and it goes into your history and your friends' feed. Badges reward you for trying new styles, breweries and places. Bars and breweries can list their live menus, so you can see what is on tap nearby. It launched in 2011 and is owned by Next Glass.
Two things changed recently. In late 2025 Untappd opened up to all kinds of packaged drinks, not only beer: wine, spirits, canned cocktails, seltzers, coffee and soda can now be checked in and rated. And its App Store name is now Untappd: Find Drinks You Love.
The app is free. Untappd Insiders is the paid tier with extra stats and features, listed in the US App Store at $5.99 a month or $54.99 a year.
No score needed
Remember the glass without rating it
In Dronk you snap your glass and that's it. The app cuts it out like a sticker and prints a polaroid with the time and the place on the map. No style, no score, no brewery to look up. The next day the whole night is ready as a video, bar by bar.

What Untappd users actually love
We read 9,712 reviews of Untappd from the App Store and Google Play, from 2011 to September 2026. The surprise: ratings are not the main reason people love it. Memory is.
- A diary of what you drank, where and with whom. Around a thousand reviews mention the log, the history or the stats. People call it an outside brain or a photo album of places.
- Friends. A small circle comparing what they tried, a toast on a check in, and a note that a friend is at a bar on the way home.
- Trying new things. Badges and unique counts push people out of their habits, like a collection game.
- Travel. What is on tap in a new city, and which bars are worth the walk.
Where people get frustrated
- Places. Reviews that mention location, nearby or the map score lowest of all topics: missing bars, closed places and a distance limit when you check in later.
- Stats behind the paid tier. Some users feel their own history should not cost extra.
- All drinks. The late 2025 expansion beyond beer brought the fastest wave of negative reviews in the whole data set. Some craft beer fans felt the feed lost its focus.
- Photo uploads. The most common bug over 15 years, especially on bad signal in a busy bar.
None of this makes Untappd a bad app. It means the best alternative depends on which part you actually use.

Untappd for wine
Since late 2025 you can check in and rate wine on Untappd, so if your friends are already there, it works. For wine alone, Vivino is the specialist: point the camera at a label and you get ratings, reviews and prices from a database of millions of wines, and it can scan a whole restaurant wine list.
Apps like Untappd for finding beer
BeerMenus shows up to date beer menus for bars, restaurants and shops nearby, and can notify you when a beer you follow turns up close by. In the US, PubPass is a craft beer passport: members get deals like $1 beers at participating bars and breweries by showing the app.
For the night, not the beer
If what you love about Untappd is the diary, the where and with whom, Dronk is built around that part. You snap your glass, it lands on the map for the friends you pick, and the next day the night is ready as a video. There is nothing to rate and no list of drinks to search. It is iPhone only, and it does not tell you anything about the beer.
Your night on a map, for the friends you pick
Snap your glass in Dronk and you show up on the map for the friends you choose. Send a cheers or ask people to come over, and when everyone is at the same table, start one of 16 party games. It only shows while you're out, and you can hide from everyone anytime.

Probably not, if you rate beer. Nothing else has its database, its badges or the number of friends already on it. But many people downloaded Untappd for a different reason: to remember good nights. If that is you, a lighter app may fit better, and you can keep Untappd for the occasional special bottle.
- You rate every beer: stay on Untappd.
- You mostly drink wine: Vivino.
- You want to know where a beer is poured: BeerMenus.
